A gifted painter of landscapes, Emile Richard Haumont maintained a studio in the city of Paris. It is probable that American artists in France were aware of his work, as "Landscape, 1883" reflects somewhat of an American esthetic with the high horizon and loose treatment of the foreground.
Haumont exhibited at various venues including the Exposition Universelle in 1889 where he was awarded a medal (honorable mention) for his submission.
